Meet Your Walk Leaders

Introducing Carl & Martin, two British advocates for mental health whose personal journeys inspire their work in supporting others, all while embracing life in Switzerland. Carl has lived here since 2002. A vinyl lover and former rugby player, he now coaches rugby to kids and believes coffee solves most of life’s challenges. Since 2018, he has led a support group in Vevey called Blokes and Black Dogs, creating a safe space for men to connect and share their experiences. Martin is driven by his experiences of witnessing his mother’s struggle with schizophrenia and his own battles with depression and PTSD. He advocates for mental health and prevention, living in the Zurich hinterland with his French wife and Italian rescue dog, Louie. He is also the host of the monthly Zurich edition of 'Blokes & Black Dogs'. Allegedly, he makes THE best burger you'll ever taste.

FAQ

WHY IS THE WALK JUST FOR BLOKES?

add remove
Walk for a Bloke is a unique event for blokes to come together and walk 25kms to raise awareness and funds for bloke’s mental health.

It also serves as medicine, enabling blokes to be active, to connect, listen, learn and to share in the walk and building resilience through action.  We recognise wives, girlfriends, sisters, mothers and mates play an important role in blokes lives and welcome the women in your life to join as a supporter (see ticketing option) or a volunteer (contact bec@spoketoabloke.org).

WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?

add remove
We started Spoke to a Bloke after losing our brother and best mate to suicide. As a team, we work on the charity weekends and after hours, we are passionate about making a real impact. 100% of funds raised goes directly to running the charity, our events and projects to support blokes mental health.

WHY DOES THE WALK FINISH AT HOTELS, PUBS AND CLUBS?

The feedback we have had is blokes want to get together and celebrate completing the walk. We encourage blokes to take the opportunity to continue conversations they started on the walk and share in their achievement of completing the walk together.

CAN I WALK ON MY OWN

add remove

If you are attending an organised location, we welcome everyone on the day.  If you are walking on your own there will be an opportunity for you to make yourself known and buddy up with other solo walkers if you wish.

For our grab a mate and walk anywhere option, please do just this - grab a mate and enjoy a day of great conversations and checking in on each other wherever your 25km walk may take you.

WHAT IF 25KM IS TOO MUCH FOR ME ON THE DAY?

add remove

All walkers have the option of ending their walk at anytime they feel necessary along the course.  We encourage you to join us at the end venue to continue conversations and share in achievements together.  If you do decide to exit the course, please ensure you let a volunteer or event lead know.

OUR ALCOHOL POLICY

We respect the personal choices of each participant regarding alcohol consumption. At each end venue, lunch will be available for purchase at own arrangements, and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase at the discretion of the attendee.

Alcohol service will be managed by the venue in accordance with responsible service guidelines to ensure consumption is safe and appropriate.
