Walk for a Bloke Perth

What is Walk for a Bloke

Previously known as Nicks Walk, Walk for a Bloke is a unique event for blokes to come together and walk 25kms to raise awareness and funds for bloke’s mental health.

Walk for a Bloke is more than just a fundraiser – it can act as a form of medicine. By encouraging physical activity, creating opportunities for mateship, and providing a safe space for men to share, listen, and learn, we help build resilience and strengthen mental well-being through action.

My Journey with Mental Health: A Personal Reflection

Friday 7th Mar
Like many of us, I have my own journey with mental health that’s shaped who I am today. When I was 21, I found myself in a really dark place and was diagnosed with depression and anxiety. It got so severe that I ended up hospitalised for a month. For the next five years, I was on medication, just trying to get by. I struggled with low self-esteem and a complete lack of confidence, which really held me back. I went through countless appointments with doctors and counsellors, but it often felt like I was stuck in a loop without much progress. This in a culture and time where talking wasn’t seen as a manly thing to do I knew that I had to make a conscious decision to break the cycle and start opening up to my peers.

Tragically, I've also lost two close friends to the relentless grip of mental health struggles. Both of them were young men with so much potential and life ahead of them. Their losses hit hard and reminded me of how crucial it is to talk about these issues openly.

Last year brought even more heartache when I lost my dad to brain cancer. He was my hero, a figure of strength and wisdom in my life. While he might not have taught me the ins and outs of earthmoving, his guidance and patience were unmatched, and I miss him every day. He was an enormous inspiration in opening up to people. He had no problem in having a good cry or a heart to heart with someone.

Shortly after returning to Australia, I faced another shock: a friend passed away unexpectedly from an undiagnosed heart condition at just 37. That loss shook me to my core in ways I didn’t expect.

Each of these experiences has been a part of my journey, shaping my understanding of mental health and the importance of support and connection. I believe sharing our stories can help us all feel a little less alone.

This is more than a walk, it’s breaking those barriers that have taken so many.
