Day 7

Tuesday 10th Jun
As soon as I turned out of the overnight stay it started to rain heavily. I was not surprised at this point as it had managed to rain on every day of the ride. Luckily for me, I had grown accustomed to cycling in the rain. I was greeted again by beautiful coastal roads on this day. Meanwhile, the right knee was really starting to fail. By the 60 kilometre mark, it was real painful. 'Last day' I had to keep saying to myself. I again sat in the grass at the 90 kilometre mark feeling physically exhausted. Getting to the end of the day and seeing Inverness come into view felt absolutely surreal. I couldn't believe we had covered 800 kilometres. Arriving at the finish line felt amazing, and again absolutely surreal. The end of an amazing journey that I will never forget, made all the better by everyone's generous donations. Thank you so much everyone for the support. That's me done. As always, check in on your mates - a conversation really can save a life. See you for the next one.

Day 6

Tuesday 10th Jun
Sun! The first day where the sun was shining and the wind was calm. For the first time, I could take off the gloves and rain jacket and really take in my surroundings. 30 kms later, however, the rain returned and it would not leave for the rest of the day. This is the day where the body really started to feel tired. I had to stop at the 95 kilometre mark to sit in the grass and recover. The route itself was beautiful; coastal roads with limited wind made for an amazing day of riding. I hit a wall at the 105 kilometre mark, and the riding got very physically challenging from that point on. Arriving in Helmsdale after 114 kilometres, the end was in sight.

Day 5

Tuesday 10th Jun
The longest day had a lasting impact - knee pain in the right leg, and plenty of it. As usual, it was windy with on and off rain. It was a shorter day at 112km with 1.7kms of elevation, so that was in my favour. The bike started to show some wear and tear as the chain dropped off the bike twice near the end of the day. I was also beginning to show some wear and tear. Getting to the overnight stay in Thurso, the back, neck, ass and knee were all feeling it. The sun came out when I arrived in Thurso though, so I took that as a good omen.

Day 4

Thursday 5th Jun
147 kilometres from Ullapool to Durness, the longest day. I was hoping for some sunshine and a lighter breeze, neither of which I got. Instead, the same gale force winds persisted with rain on and off through the day. The road was up and down all day, evidenced by the 3.2km of elevation on the stat sheet. The scenery was again spectacular, with Ben Loyal's Sgor Chaonasaid (yeah I had to look the name up) being one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Tough day, but the cause kept me going.

Day 3

Wednesday 4th Jun
Weather was grim from the start - wind blowing a gale, and heavy rain. That set the tone for the day. The wind remained strong and the rain was consistently on and off. Thankfully I rode with the wind for a majority of the day. At the 110 kilometre mark, I found myself in a hail storm which was relentless. I had one hand on the bike to stay stable in the wind, and the other to keep the hail from hitting my face. 137 kilometres ridden today with tomorrow being the longest day. Get keen.

Day 2

Tuesday 3rd Jun
Starting at Gerry's hostel today, I didn't know what I was in for. About 20 kilometres in I thought I was on a pretty decent climb. Turned out to be Bealach-na-Ba, one of the largest climbs in the UK. Clearly my research of the route  was good, I thought it was on day 3 or 4. The climb was real tough, especially when the head-wind kicked in which had me going slower than the hikers. The wind was a feature of the rest of the day. With it behind you you'd find yourself being pushed up the hill, and against it... let's just say I don't wanna talk about it. 2 kilometres of elevation, and 98 kilometres, later I arrived in Torridon. Absolutely pumped to get back out there tomorrow and do it all again (unless the wind is strong, in which case I'll cry).

Day 1

Monday 2nd Jun
The journey started in Inverness with a functioning bike and sunny weather, both of which had disappeared by the 35km mark. After bending my chain, it was back to Inverness to get the chain, and the gears, fixed. So yes, the bike lasted for a solid 35km. Getting back on the road, the weather went between overcast and rain for the next 60km. A brutal headwind for the last 30km really added to the experience. On the bright side, the bike had no more mechanical failures (hopefully this ages well). Ain't nothing like Scottish cycling. Get keen for day 2.

Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?

Wednesday 16th Apr

My name’s Cam and I’m cycling 500 miles (800 kilometres for my Australian friends) around the north coast of Scotland for men’s mental health. How did I get to this point? Well, earlier in the year the AFL world tragically lost some icons of the game. Stunned and saddened, I wanted to do something for men’s mental health. What I came up with was a 500-mile cycle around the north coast of Scotland. Did I buy my bike for 80 pounds off marketplace? Yes. Will it rain for the whole 7 days? Most likely. But it’s all worth it if I manage to raise a single dollar for a great cause or manage to start a single conversation between mates that could save a life. I will be raising money for ‘Spoke to a Bloke’ who do some great work in the sphere of men’s mental health. They subsidise psychological support for men in need of financial assistance, have a tailored video support series for men, and annually do ‘Walk for a Bloke’ in locations all across Australia to raise awareness and get men talking. Please check out their website, they do some amazing work: https://www.spoketoabloke.org/. Talk to your mates, look out for each other and I’ll see you on the other side.

Thank you for your donations.

We are a charity focused on supporting blokes mental health. We do this through running a series of community based events, including Walk for a Bloke and Challenge for a Bloke.

Funds raised via these events are being used to fund two core Spoke to a Bloke Projects;

M.I.N.D.S – The MEN IN NEED OF DIGITAL SUPPORT project is an initiative to bring together a wide range of mental health experts, knowledgeable individuals and everyday blokes to create 24/7 help content aimed at supporting adult and younger men.

121 – The 121 project will deliver direct professional help for blokes that need financial assistance and reach those that need it most.

In addition to our projects, our events also serve as medicine.  We enable blokes to be active, to connect, to share, to listen, to learn and to share in events to help build resilience through action.
